The Greater Topsail Art Association is pleased to announce that a call to artists is now underway for the 2024 ARTrageous Bras Project benefitting the Little Pink Houses of Hope Foundation and theArtworks of Wilmington. Far more than functional clothing, bras can actually be beautiful and representational artistic creations which can convey powerful messages about breast cancer — awareness, hope, empowerment, strength and survival. They make a wonderful canvas for a worthy cause!

In this creative partnership, the Greater Topsail Art Association and theArtWorks are committed to bringing a one-of-a-kind transformative and immersive experience to the Cape Fear area in this collaboration. The “2024 ARTrageous Bras - Support Can Be Beautiful” is a public art project benefitting the Little Pink Houses of Hope Foundation as well as theArtworks. The mission of the Greater Topsail Art Association is to fulfill our artistic and community obligations together, by focusing on and promoting the highest possible standards in the visual arts. We strive to serve a broad artistic community by providing opportunities for new and existing talent, and by regularly providing and participating in exhibits and events that engage both the Greater Topsail North Carolina area and the general public.

One portion of the 2024 ARTrageous Bras Project proceeds will benefit the Little Pink Houses of Hope, whose mission is “to empower breast cancer patients and families to live each day to the fullest, with direction, purpose, and hope for the cancer journey.” theArtWorks will also receive a portion of the proceeds raised in this event. theArtWork’s mission is to enhance the community, assist the artist, contribute to the revitalization of Wilmington, preserve Wilmington's commercial landmarks, and increase the opportunities for artists. This mission is fulfilled by providing a place to create, display and sell all types of art, thereby fostering Wilmington as an international art destination. Whether you are a breast cancer survivor, a family member or friend of someone who battled with breast cancer, or simply someone who would like to contribute to help fight in this battle, we would love for you to join us in this inspiring and creative project! The decorated bras will be on display at the Verrazzano Gallery (at theArtworks) from Thursday, October October 24th through Sunday, October 27, 2024. The bra auction will take place during the Fourth Friday Artwalk, October 25th at the Verrazzano Gallery.

If you wish to participate in this project by decorating a bra and donating it to The 2024 ARTrageous Bras project for auction, please download the PROSPECTUS found at www.greatertopsailarts.com and follow the instructions provided. Some sample bras are provided in the prospectus for your reference. Deadline for design submission is August 15, 2024, 11:59pm. "Behind the Curtain, Portraits of Courage, Strength, Excellence...."

.. in Charlie’s own words, “I've been working on this project almost a year, and it has been one of the most impactful experiences that I have had as a photographer.  I am interviewing and photographing 35 combat veterans to capture the essence of their experiences.  The exhibit opens 5/24 and closes 6/14.  I hope that you will attend… Thank you for your support.”

Please join eli for the opening of her solo exhibition, “Behind the Curtain, Portraits of Courage, Strength, Excellence….” on Friday, May 24, 2024, from 6-9 pm.

The exhibition includes portraits and life stories of 35 combat veterans spanning the Vietnam war through today. Please come to meet the veterans and learn more about their heroism and dedication to us all.

Beck Fine Art Gallery will be opening on May 24th and will be up for viewing and sale until June 14th.

Wilmington’s art scene has expanded significantly with the addition of a new gallery featuring nine resident and two guest artists and anchored by artist-painter, Dan Beck.  Beck Fine Gallery is held at at 200 Willard St. in theArtworks building (between S. Third and S. Front Streets). The event is open to the public. 

The gallery is founded by Dan Beck, an internationally renowned and award-winning impressionist painter whose figures, still life and landscape paintings have been exhibited across the country.  The gallery represents artists living in North Carolina and strives to bring the finest contemporary art to Southeastern North Carolina.   

The other exceptionally talented and accomplished resident artists include Kari Feuer, Susan Fishbein, Ann Hair, Pappy Khouri, Heidi-Lee Peach, Ora Sorensen, Peggy Vineyard and Jenny McKinnon Wright.  Current guest artists are celebrated painters Richard Oversmith and Jove Wang. Ceramic artist Mark Hewitt’s work is also displayed at the gallery.

Las Artistas Artist Statement:

We are a group of 12 women abstract artists who have been creating art together for over 5 years. Most of us have been painting for many decades. We come from all corners of the United States once a year to spend a week painting with each other and enjoying one another’s company.

It all started with artist and gallery owner, Merry Calderoni, and several artists she had met (all abstract painters) in various workshops. One of the artists, Cookie Ashton, convinced Merry to host a self directed workshop in Merry’s city of residence, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. At the time, she and her husband, Ben, owned a Bed and Breakfast that was an ideal size for the group. Merry also found a perfect studio space at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel. This was the beginning of our many years of friendship and of our love of creating art together. We spent 3 consecutive years enjoying our time as a group in SMA, then moved to another venue in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We now find ourselves in the lovely city of Wilmington, North Carolina, courtesy of one of our participants, Peggy Vineyard.

Our love of creating art is what holds us together. We give each other support and encouragement during our workshop journeys. It is the painting that we have in common and is our focus, but our group also brings to the table varied professional backgrounds and experiences: real estate agent, gallery owners, tv personality and caterer, art teacher, horse owners and fox hunters, social workers, journalist, accountant and interior designer.

Our deep friendship has grown by standing side by side in a quiet studio creating art and then in the celebratory times in between painting sessions. Originally we came to make our art but, through the years, we have developed a personal understanding of and admiration for each other.  Art brought us together and still does…only now we also come for the camaraderie and  fellowship. What could be more fun or rewarding?
